Development

Increased access to the Arctic is threatening habitats and wildlife. As the ice melts, it becomes easier to develop and extract fossil fuel resources, such as oil and natural gas. After the fuel is extracted it also needs to be transported south through pipelines or on oil tankers. Continued industrial development means more infringement on Arctic species and habitats.
