Government of Canada supports Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) educational campaign, “Our Arctic, Our Life”
Ottawa, Ontario, May 21, 2010 – The Honourable Jim Prentice, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today announced that Parks Canada will contribute to the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) educational campaign, Our Arctic, Our Life.
"In this International Year of Biodiversity, we are proud to contribute to CAZA’s Our Arctic, Our Life campaign," declared Minister Prentice. "Our government’s support for CAZA highlights our commitment to informing and educating Canadians about Arctic biodiversity."
The Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums is a national non-profit organization that represents Canada’s 25 accredited zoos and aquariums. It establishes standards through its accreditation programs, directs and coordinates work in the areas of research, conservation and education, and represents its members’ interests at all levels of government.
With its $50,000 contribution, the Government of Canada is one of the campaign’s key partners. With the support of its partners, CAZA is able to provide a quality information and educational campaign for its 25 members. The goal of Our Arctic, Our Life is not just to inform and educate Canadians about Arctic biodiversity, but to urge them to take concrete steps to sustain it. Parks Canada’s contribution will be used to create banners, brochures, a Web site, and other resources for distribution to CAZA members.
"This initiative is an excellent opportunity to connect with urban Canadians and introduce them to the wonders of the Canadian Arctic," added Minister Prentice. "It is also a chance to strengthen the bond between Canada’s urban population and residents of our remote northern regions."
The Government of Canada is committed to preserving biodiversity, and to working with partners like CAZA to ensure Canada’s natural landscape and unique biodiversity remain available for all Canadians to appreciate and enjoy.
