Beluga Communication - Vancouver Aquarium

The Vancouver Aquarium has played a key role in developing our understanding of how beluga whales in the Arctic communicate with one another. Aquarium researcher, Dr. Lance Barrett-Lenard and Associate Researcher, Valeria Vergara are studying beluga vocalizations to understand how baby belugas learn to communicate and the significance of the many types of vocalizations that have been identified. This information is important in order to understand the possible impacts of increased noise from shipping and commercial activities as ice decreases in Arctic waters.
